Red Bull Salzburg eliminated in the CHL round of sixteen despite a strong performance and victory over ERC Ingolstadt

EC Red Bull Salzburg produced a strong performance at home against ERC Ingolstadt in the second leg of the Champions Hockey League round of sixteen on Wednesday, winning 4:3, but were eliminated from the current CHL season in the round of sixteen with an aggregate score of 6:9. Ingolstadt will face Swedish club Frölunda in the quarter-finals.

EC Red Bull Salzburg missed out on reaching the Champions Hockey League quarter-finals. Despite a passionate comeback in the second leg against Ingolstadt, they ultimately lacked the decisive goals to fully overturn the deficit from the first meeting. The German side prevailed 9:6 on aggregate over the two legs.

Salzburg started on the front foot and reduced the deficit early on when Brandon Coe chased down a deflected puck and fired clinically into the corner. Shortly before the end of the period, the home side struck again: Nash Nienhuis sent the puck through traffic from distance to make it 2:1.

Salzburg continued their comeback in the second period. Travis St. Denis equalised in a bizarre sequence during a delayed penalty – the video review confirmed the goal to make it 3:1 in the game, leaving a two-goal deficit on aggregate.

Salzburg remained on the front foot in the third period, too. However, the Germans initially pulled one back. After pulling their goaltender and with a man advantage, Mario Huber restored the home side's two-goal lead. Despite the intense pressure and clear territorial advantage, the two further goals required did not come before an empty-net goal sealed the aggregate result in Ingolstadt's favour.

Salzburg therefore bow out of the current CHL season, but showed great character in the second leg and fought back impressively.
