Red Bull Salzburg elim­i­nated by Rögle in the round of sixteen – Marco Kasper with a goal and an assist

EC Red Bull Salzburg's Champions Hockey League campaign ended in the round of sixteen.

The reigning champion of the win2day ICE Hockey League had earned a promising position against the defending Champions Hockey League titleholder a week earlier. Salzburg travelled to Sweden for Tuesday's decisive second leg with a two-goal cushion.

Rögle Ängelholm made a lightning start and celebrated the opening goal as early as the third minute. The determined Salzburg side initially had little answer to the impressive Swedish top team. At the start of the second period, Rögle put themselves in the stronger position with two quick goals.

ÖEHV forward Marco Kasper made it 4:0 in the 29th minute, giving Rögle a two-goal aggregate lead. Thomas Raffl did pull one back in the middle period, but the Champions Hockey League titleholders saw out the home game too coolly to give Salzburg another chance of a comeback.

Rögle Ängelohm ultimately prevailed 5:1, securing their place in the CHL quarter-finals.

CHAMPIONS HOCKEY LEAGUE PLAY-OFF FORMAT

In the CHL play-offs, the first three play-off rounds – the round of sixteen, quarter-finals and semi-finals – are decided over home and away legs using the established aggregate score format. The season concludes with the final on 18th February, which is played as a single game.

The play-off stages are contested over a first and second leg. The team with the better aggregate result from both games progresses. The first game ends after 60 minutes, even if it is tied. A 10-minute overtime period (3 vs. 3) and a possible penalty shoot-out (5 penalties per team, then until a winner is decided) can only take place after the second game if the aggregate result of both games is tied after 60 minutes.
