Para national team celebrates two wins against Germany
Just under six weeks before the start of the Para World Championship Group C in Bangkok (THA), Austria’s Para national team played three warm-up matches against Germany in Füssen (GER). They won the first two games 5:2 and 4:3, before suffering a 0:3 defeat on Sunday.

A few weeks before the World Championship, this was an important assessment of where the team and coaching staff stand, as they had to do without head coach Lucas Herrnegger following the birth of his son a few days ago.
A great deal was tested in all three games, with the lines in particular repeatedly reshuffled in order to get a feel for the right combinations for the World Championship. The transition play between defence and attack was also a key focus.
Germany selected a development squad for the three warm-up matches, featuring several debutants as well as five players with international experience.
After Friday evening’s 5:2 win, assistant coach Gee Goll had already gained important insights into the line combinations. Overall, an improvement was already evident compared to the Olmütz Cup at the end of August. Game 2 on Saturday was more evenly contested. Germany led 2:1 after two periods, but the Austrians stepped up again in the final period and turned the game around. Final score: 4:3 to Austria.
"Our performance was a little inconsistent, which was certainly also due to the small squad. In addition to the long journey and yesterday’s evening game, we also had a training session this morning. Fatigue made us inaccurate at times and left us a step behind in places. On the whole, however, the coordination between defence and attack worked better again, although there is still room for improvement. All in all, the 4:3 away win was deserved," reflected Gee Goll.
On Sunday, our neighbours finally made amends for the previous defeats and won 3:0.
Assistant coach Gee Goll: "Today, you could see that they really wanted to win this game. It was a deserved win for Germany. They showed full commitment. This defeat had been coming for us somewhat, as the fatigue caused by the small squad increased from period to period. In the end, it was no longer so easy physically. Nevertheless, it was a very good weekend in which we gained many insights regarding the line combinations. We found several combinations that work very well together, and our goaltenders also did a very good job. At the next team camp, the aim will be to prepare ourselves as well as possible for the World Championship."
