Opening win over Slovenia for Austria’s U18 at the Four Nations Tour­na­ment in Budapest

Austria took a late lead in a hard-fought first period against the Risi. On the power play, Emil Wagner was perfectly placed in the slot after a rebound and fired home for 1:0 (at 19). Austria faced two penalty kills in the second period, surviving the first unscathed. Two minutes after the halfway point of the game, Tim Koštomaj Valenčak levelled the score at 1:1 for Slovenia with a powerful power-play shot (at 32).

Red-White-Red found the perfect response in the second period: Ferdinand Humer drove in front of the opposing net and restored the lead at 2:1 from the slot (at 39). Nearly six minutes had been played in the final period when Vitus Plank embarked on a fine solo run down the left wing and finished superbly to make it 3:1 for Austria (at 46).

Austria comfortably saw out the game, with Paul Vaschauner sealing the win with an empty-net goal 41 seconds from time (at 60). Slovenia will compete in the IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship Division I, Group A in Krynica, Poland, in April 2026. Austria aim to return to this division at the World Championship in Tallinn at the end of April 2026.
