Olympic Qualifiers: Squad for preparations confirmed
Head coach Roger Bader will bring together 25 skaters and three goaltenders in Graz next Monday for preparations for the Olympic Qualifiers, taking place from 29 August to 1 September in Bratislava (SVK). Marco Kasper and David Reinbacher, both of whom missed the World Championship in Prague, will also be involved. Experienced players Johannes Bischofberger and Raphael Herburger also join the squad. Marco Rossi is the only player forced to withdraw due to pre-season preparations with the Minnesota Wild. Austria will play their final warm-up game before the qualifiers against Slovenia in Graz on 24 August.

“I am pleased that we have David Reinbacher and Marco Kasper with us, two players who already have World Championship experience and who hopefully have NHL careers ahead of them. In Johannes Bischofberger and Raphael Herburger, we also have two players who have repeatedly demonstrated their qualities in international ice hockey and have always been in contention for the World Championship in recent years, but unfortunately had to withdraw recently for different reasons,” analyses Head coach Roger Bader the additions to his squad.
The Swiss coach will take a total of 28 players onto the ice in Graz, with the squad to be reduced to 25 after the preparation week. The roster predominantly features the players who sparked ice hockey euphoria at the World Championship in Prague (CZE) in May. The four players mentioned above are added to the group. Collectively, Austria's players have 1.757 international appearances, 233 goals and 312 assists.
Marco Rossi has agreed with his NHL club, the Minnesota Wild, to take part in pre-season preparations in North America and will therefore miss the Olympic Qualifiers.
A total of four on-ice training sessions are scheduled before the team takes part in the pre-game skate on Thursday morning ahead of the first warm-up game against Slovenia in Bled that evening.
On Saturday at 16:00, Austria host the team promoted to the top division and their upcoming opponent at the 2025 World Championship in Stockholm (SWE) in Graz – tickets are already available HERE.
“We will field the strongest possible Austrian team in Graz and, particularly after the outstanding performances in Prague, I hope we can play in front of a full arena,” says Roger Bader as he calls on the fans to rally behind the team ahead of the Olympic Qualifiers.
At the Olympic Qualifiers themselves, Austria will face hosts Slovakia in their opening game the following week, take to the ice against Kazakhstan just under 17 hours later and meet Hungary in the final game on Sunday.

2024 Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Final Qualification, Group D

The Slovak federation has designated dedicated Austria sections for two matches: Sections B11 and B12 for the opening match against Slovakia on 29 August. For the Sunday match, Austria vs. Hungary, Sections A5, A6, A7 and A9. The Slovak federation has not issued any recommendation or guidance for the Friday match against Kazakhstan.
The Olympic Qualification will be played at Bratislava’s Ondrej Nepela Arena, which has a capacity of more than 10.000 spectators and was also a venue for the 2019 World Championship.
