Olympic qualification: Tests against Slovenia to provide insight

Austria's men's national ice hockey team is entering the final countdown to the Olympic qualification tournament, which takes place in Bratislava next week from 29 August to 01 September: the ÖEHV side will play two warm-up games against Slovenia, on Thursday at 19:00 in Bled (SLO) and on Saturday at 16:00 in Graz. Like Austria, Slovenia are still fighting for an Olympic spot, making them ideal preparation opponents to help Head Coach Roger Bader identify the right conclusions and line combinations.

“Over the past three days, we have completed four on-ice sessions with tactical content. I want to see that implemented in the two games. It is also about finding the right line combinations and the final team,” explains Head Coach Roger Bader, who must reduce the squad by a further three players after the two warm-up games.

The team will therefore rotate in both goal and out on the ice in the two games. Captain Thomas Raffl and Ali Wukovits will definitely not play on Thursday, as both fell ill before the start of the team camp and will join the national team on Wednesday. “I will only decide who the other three players will be on Thursday,” says Roger Bader.

Like Austria, Slovenia are still fighting for a ticket to the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d´Ampezzo (ITA). Austria will face Slovakia, Kazakhstan and Hungary in Bratislava (SVK) between 29 August and 1 September. Slovenia will face Latvia, France and Ukraine in its group in Riga (LAT) during the same period.

In Group F, Denmark, Norway, Great Britain and Japan will face each other in Aalborg (DEN). The winner of each group will qualify for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games.

Head Coach Roger Bader: “All players can put themselves forward for Olympic qualification in these two warm-up games. Slovenia will also go All In on Thursday and Saturday and are therefore ideal test opponents. They too will field the strongest possible team.”
