Olympic qual­i­fi­ca­tion: Squad for the Mission Olympic Games 2026 confirmed

The 25-strong squad will assemble in Vienna on Tuesday lunchtime and complete one more training session at STEFFL Arena. On Wednesday morning, the ÖEHV contingent will travel to Bratislava (SVK), where they will face hosts Slovakia in the opener on Thursday, Kazakhstan on Friday and Hungary on Sunday. Only the group winners will secure a ticket to the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d´Ampezzo (ITA).

The red-white-red squad for Olympic qualification comprises three goaltenders, eight defencemen and 14 forwards. Captain Thomas Raffl will be absent after being ill for the past ten days and unable to take to the ice, meaning he did not recover in time.

In last week's two 2:1 wins over Slovenia, Head Coach Roger Bader gained valuable insights and considers his team ready: "We have a good team, with a good mix of young and experienced players. The team impresses with its speed and fighting spirit."

In addition, the two tests helped the team gel and get into competition mode, according to Roger Bader: "The games against Slovenia helped in that respect. At the start, we were still too playful and at times not physical enough. We will put the finishing touches on things on Tuesday and Wednesday."

That there is still work ahead for the players despite the two victories is also emphasised by Lukas Haudum: "The two wins are nice, but we cannot be entirely satisfied. It was an intense week and we know what we need to improve. We have little time, but everyone knows what it is like at this level and what it takes. Everyone knows what they have to do."

The major objective is to return to the Olympic Winter Games after twelve years, since Sochi 2014.

2024 Olympic Men´s Ice Hockey Final Qualification, Group D

29.08. – 01.09.2024, Bratislava (SVK)

For two matches, the Slovak federation has designated dedicated Austria sections: for the opening game against Slovakia on 29 August, in sections B11 and B12. For the Sunday game, Austria vs. Hungary, in sections A5, A6, A7 and A9. The Slovak federation has not issued any recommendation or instruction for the Friday game against Kazakhstan. 

The Olympic Qualifiers will be played at Bratislava’s Ondrej Nepela Arena, which has a capacity of more than 10.000 spectators and also hosted games at the 2019 World Championship.
