Olympic qual­i­fi­ca­tion: Florian Vorauer called up to replace David Madlener

David Madlener has had to withdraw from both the preparations and the Olympic qualification campaign due to injury. Florian Vorauer of EC-KAC has been called up as his replacement. On 24 August, the national team will play its final warm-up match before qualification against Slovenia in Graz.

Goaltender David Madlener, who, alongside David Kickert, played a major part in the team’s success as a reliable last line of defence at the 2024 World Championship in Prague, has had to withdraw through injury from the preparations for qualification for the 2026 Olympic Games, which begin on Monday. Florian Vorauer has been called up to replace the 32-year-old and will now form the goaltending trio for the qualifiers alongside David Kickert and Thomas Höneckl.

The Carinthian has already played 13 internationals. Florian Vorauer was most recently part of the Austrian squad at the Four Nations Tournament in Épinal, France, during the February break.

On Thursday at 19:00, Austria will play the first of two warm-up matches against Slovenia in Bled (SLO). On Saturday at 16:00, the newly promoted Top Division side and upcoming opponent at the 2025 World Championship in Stockholm (SWE) will be welcomed to Graz – tickets are already HERE.

In the Olympic qualification tournament itself, Austria will open against hosts Slovakia the following week, take to the ice against Kazakhstan just under 17 hours later and face Hungary in the final game on Sunday.

2024 Olympic Men´s Ice Hockey Final Qualification, Group D

The Slovak federation has designated dedicated Austria sections for two games: for the opening game against Slovakia on 29 August, sections B11 and B12. For the Sunday game, Austria vs. Hungary, sections A5, A6, A7 and A9. For the Friday game against Kazakhstan, the Slovak federation has made no recommendation or stipulation.

The Olympic Qualification will be played at the Ondrej Nepela Arena in Bratislava, which has a capacity of more than 10.000 spectators and was also a venue for the 2019 World Championship.
