Olomouc Cup 2024: Para national team to play for seventh place on Sunday

Austria’s Para ice hockey national team has begun its preparations for the 2024 World Para Ice Hockey Championships C-Pool in the Czech Republic. Following the heavy defeat against the very strong hosts SOHO Olomouc, the team coached by Head Coach Lucas Herrnegger was wide awake early in the morning for the match against the Czech junior team.

Austria took an early 1:0 lead through goalscorer Sandro Kalegaris, who superbly finished an energetic solo effort for his second tournament goal. The Czech Republic quickly found the right response and equalised from the slot. The match then developed into a hard-fought contest. 

After the break, the Czech junior team took advantage of a power play to take the lead for the first time, scoring from close range to make it 2:1. Just under ten minutes from the end, the Czech Republic extended their lead to 3:1, which proved decisive and was ultimately the final score. 

In the afternoon, Rennes Cormorans raced into a 3:0 lead before Sandro Kalegaris once again scored the consolation goal, brilliantly lifting the puck into the net following a breakaway.

The final round of the now fifth edition of the Olomouc Cup, featuring placement games, takes place on Sunday at the Zimní stadion Olomouc. The ÖEHV selection will now face Para Hockey Finland for seventh place.

For the ÖEHV selection, this tournament marks the start of preparations for the World Championships, which will take place in Bangkok from 26 November to 30 November 2024. There, the ÖEHV selection will face hosts Thailand, Finland and Australia.
