Olmütz Cup 2024: Para national team finish seventh after victory over Finland!

Austria’s Para ice hockey national team celebrated their first victory at the Olmütz Cup 2024 in the Czech Republic in the seventh-place play-off. The ÖEHV selection prevailed 2:1 on penalties against Para Hockey Finland after a real thriller and a 1:1 draw in regulation time. As in the previous year, Red-White-Red therefore finished in seventh place. The World Championship in Bangkok at the end of November marks the highlight of the season.

A superb finish for Austria’s Para ice hockey national team in the Czech Republic: The team coached by Head Coach Lucas Herrnegger fell 0:1 behind against Finland after the break on Sunday at the Zimní stadion Olomouc in the seventh-place play-off, but fought their way magnificently back into the game.

 

Austria equalised through Thomas Schilcher, who set up the puck himself from his own defensive zone for a determined solo effort and finished superbly. The game remained exciting until the end, with neither team able to score another goal. The decision came in the penalty shootout.


Austria goaltender Michael Ossimitz saved all five Finnish attempts. With the tenth and final penalty of the first series, Dennis Wliszczak fired Austria to a 2:1 victory on penalties against Finland.


At the fifth edition of the Olmütz Cup, Austria once again finished in seventh place, as they had the previous year. For the ÖEHV selection, this tournament marked the start of preparations for the World Championship, which takes place in Bangkok from 26 November to 30 November 2024. The ÖEHV selection will face hosts Thailand, Finland and Australia there.
