ÖEL sees its first penalty shootout

Nostalgia Derby – that was the impromptu name given to the traditional clash between WEV and ATSE Graz. Memories of legendary encounters from the past were rekindled, and this match seamlessly continued in that vein. From the outset, it was an evenly matched contest, played at an incredibly high level. After just 89 seconds of play, the score was already 1:1. The Styrians led 3:2 after the first period. Following a scoreless second period, Mickael Pierron netted the deserved equaliser for the hosts, making it 3:3 with just under five minutes remaining.

The ensuing overtime produced no decision, which only came in the penalty shootout, where WEV prevailed 2:1.

Michael Vorlaufer, WEV: "It was a game of an incredible standard, but also a little physical. With overtime and a penalty shootout, this Nostalgia Derby – as we have impromptu named it – had the absolute perfect finish."

In the second North-East Group game between UEHV RAUCH Technology Sharks Gmunden and EV Zeltweg Murtal Lions, the visitors took control at the start of the second period after Daniel Forcher scored twice to make it 3:1 within 112 seconds. Florian Dinhopel extended the lead to 4:1 in the 34th minute. The Murtal Lions continued to dictate proceedings in the final period, proving simply more determined than the Sharks on the night.

Thomas Schatzl, Chairman of UEHV RAUCH Technology Sharks Gmunden: "Our SHARKS' lack of training was also apparent in this game, while the absence of two defencemen proved fatal against a strong Zeltweg side. Zeltweg are a compact, well-drilled team and were visibly superior on the day."

Following an exciting weekend, the Ö Eishockey Liga continues with three games on National Day. In the North-East Group, the Sharks from Gmunden face Kapfenberger SV EHC, while EV Zeltweg Murtal Lions host ATSE Graz in a hot Styrian clash.
