ÖEHV launches goalkeeper coach training programme at the end of February

This initiative was launched before the COVID-19 pandemic in order to provide coaches with sound, high-quality further training in goalkeeping. From 20 to 23 February, it will resume in Salzburg under the direction of Reinhard Divis. In future, the further training programme is intended to become a fixed part of the ice hockey calendar.

“It is very important that we take the next steps in goalkeeper coach training,” stresses Sport Director Roger Bader, who points to the successful first edition in 2019 as part of the Österreich-Cup in Klagenfurt, which had more than 30 participants at the time. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other reasons, a continuation has been delayed until now.

Around a year ago, we took an in-depth look at initiatives relating to goalkeeping and decided, as one measure, to offer this further training programme again, Roger Bader: “If we want more and better goalkeepers in the future, we also need more and better coaches in the country. This is a step that will help us improve our goalkeeper development in the long term, and I am very pleased that Reinhard Divis, a former NHL goalkeeper and long-serving goalie coach with the national team, is taking the lead here.”

The further training programme is aimed at anyone who wishes to engage intensively with the fundamentals of goalkeeper training and/or deepen their expertise. The course begins with Module 1 and serves as the introduction to a two-stage training series. Under the guidance of experienced experts, participants will receive sound knowledge and practical insights into the fundamentals of modern goalkeeper training.

Reinhard Divis: “We are addressing the right area. We want and need more well-trained coaches in goalkeeping. In the first module, we will start with the basics, looking at the responsibilities a coach has, what they themselves need to bring to the role and what requirements goalkeepers need. In the practical section, we will go through and discuss various exercises. This is a first step, and I hope that in future we will also be able to offer this training as a state-recognised qualification, as is the case, for example, in Sweden.”

Florian Mühlstein, Head of Youth Training and Development: “With this training and further education programme, we want to ensure that our goalkeepers receive the best possible support and development. This is intended to create greater depth among well-trained domestic goalkeepers, who can then also make their way into the leagues and national teams.”
