The Ö Ice Hockey League added the missing piece to Austrian ice hockey last year. The aim was to establish another nationwide league below the ICE Hockey League and the Alps Hockey League, where young players can be developed for the Alps Hockey League and professional ice hockey with the support of experienced players.
The first season, featuring 16 teams from six federal states (Styria, Carinthia, Upper Austria, Vienna, Tyrol and Vorarlberg), offered everything ice hockey fans in Austria could wish for: attractive, high-scoring games that were at times highly emotional during the playoffs.
In the end, WSG Swarovski Wattens – Penguins prevailed over Kapfenberger SV – Eishockeyclub in the final, which, like the preceding playoffs, was played over two legs in the Champions Hockey League format, winning by an aggregate score of 6:3 (2:2, 4:1) to be crowned the first champions of the Ö Ice Hockey League.
The ÖEL will begin the new season in October. The format remains unchanged in its second year. Three regional groups are planned for the regular season – Group West, Group South and Group North-East – each featuring six teams. Details are currently still being finalised with the potential sixth team in Group North-East. VEU Feldkirch will definitely join Group West. After the regular season, the championship title will be decided in an interregional playoff.
As in the inaugural season, the ÖEL regular season in Carinthia/East Tyrol in Group South also serves as the Kärntner AHC Division 1. In addition to the ÖEL, a separate playoff will be held after the regular season to determine the champions of AHC Division 1. The Ö Ice Hockey League season will begin in early October. The exact fixture list will be published in the coming weeks.
