NHL Draft: Gregor Biber selected by Utah at No. 98

Experts had given the 17-year-old an outside chance beforehand, but it has now become reality: Gregor Biber was selected by the new NHL franchise Utah Hockey Club in the fourth round at No. 98. In the final round, at No. 204, newly naturalised Austrian Vasily Zelenov was also selected by Buffalo.

Just a few weeks ago, Gregor Biber, who had already played for the U18 and U20 national teams, also made his senior national team debut. He was included by Head Coach Roger Bader in week 1 of World Championship preparations and took to the ice against Latvia. The defenceman then joined the U18 national team, with whom he competed at the Division IA World Championship and won bronze.

For the fast-rising player, who most recently played for Rögle in Sweden's U20, a genuine talent factory, the draft is the culmination of a strong season. At the 62nd NHL Draft, held in Las Vegas on 28 and 29 June 2024, Gregor Biber was picked by Utah in the 4th round at No. 98 overall.

So early, Gregor Biber himself had not expected it at all: “I was still at Wörthersee with friends and was, of course, following the draft on my phone. Suddenly, I received a message from Utah, followed immediately by the call. I was really surprised and absolutely thrilled. It was a really awesome moment that I will not forget.”

Now things are coming thick and fast. He is already heading overseas for rookie camp on Sunday.

There was more reason to celebrate in the final round of the draft: recently naturalised Vasily Zelenov was picked by the Buffalo Sabres at No. 208.
