Marco Kasper, who started the season with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League (AHL) and recorded two points in two games (1 goal, 1 assist), has been summoned back to the "Motor City" by the Detroit Red Wings for urgent reasons or, as it is known in the NHL, "under emergency conditions".
An "Emergency Call" is possible when a club’s roster is reduced by injuries, illness or suspensions to fewer than two goaltenders, six defencemen and twelve forwards.
The team coached by head coach Derek Lalonde currently sits eighth and last in the Atlantic Division after four games, with one win and three defeats.
The 20-year-old Kasper, who prepared intensively for his new challenges in his home city of Klagenfurt over the summer and bolstered Austria's squad at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Bratislava in late August/early September, caught the eye for the Red Wings in the penultimate pre-season game with two superb goals in the first period against the Ottawa Senators.
Kasper also registered an assist against the Chicago Blackhawks at the end of September. Marco Kasper has already played one NHL game: on his debut against the Toronto Maple Leafs on 2 April 2023 in the 2022/2023 season, he spent 14:59 minutes on the ice. The centre suffered a fractured kneecap during that game but played the match to its conclusion.
