Next Step in World Cham­pi­onship prepa­ra­tions: Slovenia

On Thursday and Friday evening, Austria's men's national ice hockey team will play their next two warm-up games in preparation for the 2024 World Championship, taking on Slovenia. Our neighbours are themselves in the final stages of preparation for their Division IA World Championship and are likely to field their World Championship squad. For Head Coach Roger Bader's team, it is about taking the next step.

Five new players have joined the squad this week – Dominic Zwerger, Benjamin Baumgartner, Henrik Neubauer, Nico Brunner and Philipp Wimmer. "They have all performed well," Roger Bader was able to see for himself as early as Monday, with everyone fit and ready. Ahead of the double-header against Slovenia, the Swiss coach is focused solely on the development of his own team: "We want to build on the things we did well last week. Every week and in every training session, we work on our defensive play in our own zone, on breaking out of our own zone under pressure from the opposition and on making our attacks even more direct and vertical. That is where we want to improve."

The head coach now wants to see that against Slovenia under competitive conditions as well. He expects Slovenia to be a strong opponent, already close to their World Championship squad. The two nations also faced each other in World Championship preparations last year. Austria lost 3:5 in Villach and still have a score to settle.

It has been confirmed today that Marco Rossi and the Minnesota Wild will not reach the NHL playoffs. The season ends for the 22-year-old on 18 April with the home game against the Seattle Kraken. "We discussed this situation in detail during my visit in February and I expect him to join the national team and to be looking forward to it. Naturally, he has to be fit and Minnesota have to give the go-ahead, but I am not aware of anything to suggest otherwise. I think he should be able to join the national team for the final week of preparation," is Roger Bader convinced that the team will receive reinforcements from the NHL for the World Championship.
