New World Ranking and 2024 World Cham­pi­onship group allo­ca­tion

The IIHF World Ranking takes into account performances over the past four years at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship and the Olympic Winter Games, and is calculated annually to determine the seeding for the World Championship, the Olympic ice hockey tournaments and qualification.

Russia and the United States remain in third and fourth place respectively, while Germany make a major leap. After winning the silver medal, the Germans move up from ninth to fifth place. Since the introduction of the IIHF World Ranking in 2004, Germany have never been ranked higher than fifth, a position they also held in 2021.

Sweden drop one place to sixth, while Switzerland remain seventh. Czechia lost two places and are now ranked eighth, the lowest position the country has ever held in the IIHF Men's World Ranking. Slovakia drop one position to ninth, while bronze medallists Latvia move up one place to complete the top 10 at Denmark's expense.

Austria are ranked 16th after successfully retaining their top-division status. They are 135 points behind __OEHV_NUM_W_A__th-placed Norway, which is ten points fewer than their 145-point advantage over Slovenia in 17th place.

With Mongolia returning and Indonesia taking part for the first time, the 2023 IIHF Men's World Ranking comprises a record 58 countries.

Against the hosts in Prague

An initial group allocation for the 2024 World Championship places Austria in Group B, which will be played in Prague. However, changes are still expected, meaning that the final group allocation and schedule will only be published by the IIHF at a later date.

As things stand, Austria will face hosts Czechia, Finland, the USA, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and promoted Great Britain in the Czech capital.
