Narrow friendly defeat for Austria’s U18 men against World Cham­pi­onship oppo­nents Slovenia

Austria’s U18 men’s national ice hockey team suffered a narrow 3:4 defeat against World Championship opponents Slovenia in Maribor in a friendly ahead of the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship Division I, Group A. Emil Wagner (11'), Kevin Mandl (43') and Paul Oberhauser (54') scored for the ÖEHV selection. Head Coach Florian Mühlstein’s team will face Denmark, Slovenia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and hosts Hungary at the World Championship in Hungary from Sunday.

The match in Maribor was an exciting one, with Austria leading 1:0 after the first period thanks to a goal from Emil Wagner (11'). In the middle period, the hosts turned the game around and pulled away to 3:1 with three unanswered goals.


In the final period, Kevin Mandl first reduced the deficit to 2:3 early on (43'), before Paul Oberhauser levelled the score at 3:3 with just under six minutes remaining in a turbulent closing phase (54').


Shortly afterwards, the Slovenians were awarded a penalty following a trip by Paul Sintschnig, which Oskar Rogl converted to secure a narrow 4:3 victory for the Risi. Following regulation time, there was also overtime and a penalty shoot-out for testing purposes, in which the Slovenians prevailed.
