Marco Rossi scores Wild winner in Austrian show­down with Marco Kasper's Red Wings

Detroit led 3:1 early in the final period at Little Caesars Arena after goals from Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond – Minnesota's Vinnie Hinostroza had cut the deficit to 1:2 on the power play in the second period – before Matt Boldy pulled one back for Minnesota.

Then Rossi had his big moment: with the net empty in regulation, he set up Marcus Foligno's late 3:3 equaliser with a perfect pass from behind the goal.

In overtime, the Vorarlberg native had to serve a hooking penalty. Minnesota survived the precarious short-handed situation – and how: just seconds after his penalty expired, Marco Rossi was sent clear by Joel Eriksson Ek and, following up, put the puck over the line for the 4:3 winner.

The Vorarlberg native, who logged 19:12 minutes of ice time, was named First Star of the Game after the contest and now has 49 points (20 goals, 29 assists) in 56 games. His ÖEHV colleague Marco Kasper, who logged a total of 16:06 minutes of ice time, was held without a point for the Red Wings this time. The Carinthian currently has 20 points (9 goals, 11 assists).

The last Austrian showdown had taken place six years ago. On 17 February 2019, Michael Raffl and the Philadelphia Flyers beat Thomas Vanek and the Detroit Red Wings 3:1. Both Austrian players were held without a point on that occasion.
