Lustenau crowned Ö Eishockey Liga cham­pions for the first time after final win over Kapfen­berg

Championship showdown in the Ö Eishockey Liga, Part III: EHC Lustenau faced the in the decisive third game of the best-of-three series at the Rheinhalle on Saturday, in front of 2.200 fans.KSV Kängurus at the Rheinhalle on Saturday in front of __OEHV_NUM_E_A__ fans in the third and decisive game of the best-of-three series. For the third and final time, the showpiece final was opened before the game with the stirring Austrian national anthem.

The Lions had their first power play as early as the second minute, and eight seconds before the numerical advantage expired, Lucas Haberl forced the puck, which had come loose following a scramble in front of the Kapfenberg goal, over the line for 1:0 (4 min.). Backed by the early lead, the Vorarlberg side were dominant. As the first period progressed, the Styrians also ventured increasingly into the offensive zone.

Then came a moment of concern when Maximilian Ramsbacher fired from just behind the blue line and his KSV team-mate Pierre Graf was struck full in the face by the puck. Unfortunately, Graf's game was over. Kapfenberg had their first power-play opportunity after just over ten minutes of play: Lukas Telsnig shot from the right face-off circle and Florian Hoppl converted the rebound from the slot to level at 1:1 (11 min.).

Just under six minutes before the end of the period, the first emotions flared as Maximilian Ramsbacher and Jonas Kutzer exchanged the first pleasantries. With every shift, the tension in the Rheinhalle became more palpable.

The hosts also had an early power play at the start of the second period, but despite a spell of pressure, they were unable to add another goal. Lustenau were closer to scoring a second, but KSV netminder Felix Nußbacher allowed nothing in the opening minutes of the middle period. The Mürztal side also occasionally got in front of EHC goaltender Felix Beck, but lacked the necessary determination.

Lustenau celebrated what they thought was the go-ahead goal, but the officiating crew disallowed Robin Wüstner's strike. Three seconds after a power play had expired, a wild scramble developed in front of the Kapfenberg goal and Chris D’Alvise poked the puck over the line for 2:1 (34 min.). KSV netminder Felix Nußbacher had to leave the ice injured immediately afterwards, with Oliver Zirngast taking over in goal.

On another power play, the Vorarlberg side patiently waited for their chance, with Dominic Haberl skilfully turning with the puck before scoring 3:1 from close range (37 min.). Kapfenberg had another power play towards the end, including a brief spell of five-on-three, but were unable to score the equaliser. For almost the first nine minutes of the final period, the Kängurus played virtually continuously shorthanded.

On a 5:3 power play, Chris D’Alvise scored from the slot to make it 4:1 (49 min.). The Draschkowitz brothers brought Kapfenberg back into the game: Lukas Draschkowitz won the puck behind the goal and passed to Christoph Draschkowitz, who reduced the deficit to 2:4 (51 min.). The next combination between brothers brought the Mürztal side within one: Manuel Trost passed to Stefan Trost, who made it 3:4 from the slot (52 min.).

Just under six minutes from the end, Chris D’Alvise deflected a shot from Jonas Kutzer to make it 5:3 for Lustenau (55 min.). The Styrians pulled netminder Oliver Zirngast for an extra attacker late on. EHC Lustenau saw out the 5:3 result, won the best-of-three series 2:1 and are Austrian champions of the Ö Eishockey Liga for the first time. With more than 7.200 fans in total in Lustenau and Kapfenberg, the final series provided impressive crowds for its intense and thrilling games.

Play-off format

The play-off match-ups, starting with the quarter-finals and continuing through the semi-finals to the final, are each played in a best-of-three series (H/A/H) decided. The teams that record two wins first advance to the semi-finals. If the scores are level after regulation time, a five-minute three-on-three overtime period will be played, as in the regular season. Should overtime also fail to produce a decision, a penalty shoot-out will follow. In the semi-finals, the highest-ranked quarter-final winner after phase 1 will play the lowest-ranked quarter-final winner after phase 1. The semi-final winners will face each other in the final.
