Lucas Herrnegger appointed new head coach of the Para national team

At the end of October, Carinthian Lucas Herrnegger, who developed through the KAC youth system both as a player and a coach, took charge of Austria’s Para ice hockey national team and will lead them at the World Championship Group C in Bangkok, Thailand, from 6 to 11 December.

Herrnegger takes over from Erik Vikström, who has been promoted from assistant coach to head coach at Herlev Eagles in the Danish professional league and is therefore unable to continue in his role as Austria’s Para team head coach. The federation is convinced that Lucas Herrnegger is the perfect successor. “He is the right man. We are very pleased that we were able to secure him for this role,” explains General Manager Martin Kogler.

It did not take much convincing on the part of Lucas Herrnegger. After just a few conversations, it was clear that both parties wanted to work together: “It is a great honour for me to take on this role.”

At the training camp held at the end of October/beginning of November, the new head coach, who works as a teacher, was able to get an impression of his team: “My first impression is very good. There is great cohesion within the team. We had seven training sessions in four days and also placed an emphasis on team building. I am convinced that we will be successful as a team. Our goal for the upcoming World Championship is to perform as well as possible. We will see what comes of it in the end.”

At the World Championship Group C, Austria will face Great Britain, France, Thailand, Kazakhstan and Armenia.
