Lakers Kärnten host win2day AWHL clash against Graz Huskies and charity match

On 19th October 2024, the Heidi Horten Arena in Klagenfurt will host a special ice hockey game. In a key win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League clash, Lakers Kärnten will face EC Graz Huskies. However, this league match, which is also a charity game, is about more than sporting rivalry and points. Under the motto "Pink the Rink", the entire game will be dedicated to solidarity with cancer patients and their families. All proceeds will go to Krebshilfe Kärnten.

The Lakers won the first meeting against the Huskies in Graz 3:0. The "return match" will now take place in Klagenfurt on Saturday. Alongside the exciting match, in which both teams will once again be competing for important points in the win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League, the encounter is a charity game.

Last weekend, the Lakers narrowly lost 3:4 to KSV Highlander, while the Huskies beat DEC Salzburg Eagles 3:1.

The Lakers’ sporting objective is to further establish women’s ice hockey in Carinthia and inspire young girls to take up the sport. The team is also aiming for a good finish in international and national championships. However, "Pink the Rink" makes it clear that the team is also a role model beyond sport.

In collaboration with Theresa Neumann, head of Krebshilfe Kärnten, the Lakers have dedicated the whole of October to solidarity with those affected.

The campaign focuses on the Pink Ribbon initiative, which highlights the importance of early breast cancer detection while also calling for the disease to be destigmatised. "We stand alongside those affected and their families," says the Lakers’ team captain. "Through our sport, we can raise awareness of the issue while promoting a healthy lifestyle."

Extensive supporting programme

The game on 19th October starts at 16:30, with doors opening at 15:45. In addition to the ice hockey game, spectators can look forward to an extensive supporting programme. The proceeds from donations will go directly to Krebshilfe Kärnten, which supports cancer patients and their families throughout Carinthia.

"This initiative is an important contribution towards helping people through one of the most difficult periods of their lives," explains Theresa Neumann. "Every donation and every visitor helps us give those affected courage and support."

Also on Saturday, the Eagles will face each other in the European Women’s Hockey League. EVB Eagles South Tyrol host DEC Salzburg Eagles in Bolzano.
