Quarter-final 2 – Game 3: KSV Kängurus reach the semi-finals after victory over EHC Kundl

The KSV Kängurus met in the Ö Eishockey Liga on Wednesday in the decisive quarter-final match at Stadthalle Kapfenberg in front of almost 1.000 fans against EHC Kundl in the decisive Ö Eishockey Liga quarter-final game at the Stadthalle Kapfenberg on Wednesday, in front of almost __OEHV_NUM_F_A__ fans. After two games, the best-of-three series was level at 1:1, with both teams having won their respective away game.

The Styrians began the showdown at full speed, firing from every angle in the opening minutes. Kundl goaltender Jakub Kostnely had to be fully alert from the outset. The Tyroleans struggled to break free from Kapfenberg's grip in the early stages, with the Mürztal side clearly superior offensively.

Completely against the run of play, the visitors suddenly took the lead: Maximilian Mackner caught KSV netminder Felix Nußbacher by surprise with the first serious shot on goal from the right face-off circle, with the puck slipping through his grasp, to make it 1:0 to Kundl (9.). Shortly afterwards, Kapfenberg had their first power play, including a 5:3 advantage for a brief spell. In a scramble in front of goal, Pierre Graf was the last to get a touch on the puck and levelled the score at 1:1 (12.). The game then became more open until the first siren. Kundl had a man advantage towards the end of the period and carried most of it over into the middle frame.

The Tyroleans failed to score on the remaining power play at the start of the second period. Kapfenberg did much better on another power play: the Mürztal side waited patiently for the perfect opportunity, which Pierre Graf converted from the slot to make it 2:1 (24.). Kundl showed just after the halfway point how important special teams are in the play-offs: one second before the end of a power play, Lukas Thaler surprised KSV goaltender Nußbacher with a long-range shot from the right to level the score at 2:2 (32.).

The match became increasingly intense and exciting. The Kängurus regained the lead in the second period: Luca Fasching scored from the slot with a superb shot to make it 3:2, just under three minutes before the second siren (38.). At the start of the final period, Kapfenberg pinned Kundl in their defensive zone as they sought to establish a two-goal lead. As the Mürztal side did not find a quick goal, the match remained a thriller. Just under six minutes from the end, Florian Hoppl made a powerful run down the right, skated behind the goal and passed to Lukas Telsnig, who fired from the left face-off circle to score for Kapfenberg and make it 4:2 (54.).

In the end, Kundl pulled goaltender Jakub Kostelny three times in total, but the Unterinntal side were unable to find a goal to narrow the deficit. On the contrary, Phileas Lyssy scored into the empty net exactly one second before the final siren to seal the 5:2 final score (60.). The KSV Kängurus won the best-of-three series against EHC Kundl 2:1 and will face SC Samina Hohenems in the semi-finals from Saturday. It is the fifth play-off series between the two teams in the Ö Eishockey Liga.

Quarter-final 4 – Game 3: SC Hohenems prevail against WEV

SC Samina HohenemsSC Samina Hohenems welcomed Wiener Eislauf-Verein to the Rheinhalle in Lustenau on Wednesday – the match was moved indoors due to the weather conditions – in front of more than 700 fans for a place in the semi-finals. Both teams had won their respective home quarter-final game in the best-of-three series.

The Steinböcke made a lightning start to the decisive clash: following a face-off win on the left in the offensive zone, Ricards Purins fired home to make it 1:0 after exactly 54 seconds, with WEV goaltender Moritz Merkader screened (1.).

Both teams engaged in an intense play-off battle in the opening minutes, with the hosts extending their lead on their first power play: once again, Ricards Purins put a rebound following a save by WEV goaltender Moritz Merkader into the net from close range to make it 2:0 (11.). The Vorarlberg side then tried to keep the game under control. Vienna battled tenaciously to finally get on the scoresheet in the showdown.

At the start of the second period, WEV had their first power play, but the side from the federal capital failed to score. There were chances at both ends on the very next shift, and the match became even faster. SC Hohenems then had a 5:3 advantage, waited patiently, and Ricards Purins completed his hat-trick from close range to make it 3:0 (26.).

13 seconds after the halfway point of the game, WEV got on the scoreboard: following a face-off on the left in the offensive zone, the puck came via several players to Xaver Emslander, who reduced the deficit to 1:3 with a backhand effort from close range (31.). Suddenly, the battle for a place in the semi-finals was exciting again. The player of the game, Ricards Purins, scored with a fierce shot from the left face-off circle following a quick attack down the left to make it 4:1, his fourth goal of the game (37.).

In the final period, WEV were unable to turn the game around; on the contrary, Dominik Hron fired from just behind the blue line to make it 5:1 for Hohenems (49 minutes). Despite the clear deficit, WEV pulled netminder Merkader while on the power play, and Sandro Schadl scored from long range into the empty net to make it 6:1 (56 minutes). SC Hohenems won the best-of-three series against WEV 2:1 and will face Kapfenberg in the semi-finals.

Play-off format and further dates

The play-off match-ups, from the quarter-finals through the semi-finals to the final, will each be decided in a best-of-three series (H/A/H). The teams that are first to record two wins advance to the semi-finals. If the score is tied after regulation time, a five-minute three-on-three overtime period will be played, as in the regular season. Should overtime also fail to produce a decision, a penalty shoot-out will follow. In the semi-finals, the highest-ranked quarter-final winner after Phase 1 will play the lowest-ranked quarter-final winner after Phase 1. The semi-final winners will face each other in the final.
