Italy win first friendly 2:1

The first of two friendlies within 21 hours goes to our southern neighbours. Shortly before the end of the first period, the red-white-red players capitalised on a power play to take a 1:0 lead. In the 39th minute, the team coached by head coach Roger Bader conceded the 1:1 equaliser, before Italy eventually scored the winner in the 48th minute.

"Bitter," was the verdict of goalscorer Ali Wukovits following the narrow 1:2 defeat. Austria looked sharp in their fifth friendly overall in preparation for the World Championship. They moved the puck smoothly and quickly across the ice, put the opposition under early pressure and created several chances. Significantly more than their opponents, but two counter-attacks were enough for them to win.

Shortly before the end of the first period, Wukovits gave Austria a deserved 1:0 lead. In the second period, they repeatedly created dangerous opportunities in front of the Italian net, but were repeatedly denied by Andreas Bernard. The goaltender was also named Italy's Man of the Match.

In the 39th minute, Austria goaltender David Kickert was finally left with no chance when Ivan Deluca broke clear on a counter-attack. A similar picture in the final period: Austria were pressing, Italy gained possession in their own zone, immediately launched the counter-attack and Marco Sanna finished off a fine combination for the 2:1 winner.

Ali Wukovits: "We were not clinical enough, had more shots on goal and chances. Tomorrow, we need to go more directly towards goal and get our shots away more quickly."

There will be an opportunity to gain revenge in Innsbruck tomorrow, Sunday. The game will be broadcast live on ORF Sport+ at 14:30.
