Head Coach Roger Bader names World Championship squad
The squad for the 2023 World Championship, which begins on 12 May in Tampere (FIN) and Riga (LAT), comprises three goaltenders, nine defencemen and 13 forwards, including six World Championship debutants in Marco Rossi, Thimo Nickl, David Reinbacher, Mario Huber, Henrik Neubauer and Lucas Thaler. Five players – David Madlener, Bernd Wolf, Kilian Zündel, Henrik Neubauer and Dominic Zwerger – went through the entire World Championship preparation. Austria opens its World Championship campaign against France on 13 May, with Sweden, Denmark, the USA, Germany, Finland and Hungary the other group-stage opponents. The Red-White-Red players and the entire staff are enjoying two days off before departing for Finland on Tuesday. “That is important so that the players can recover physically and mentally,” stresses Head Coach Roger Bader. Looking back on the past few weeks, it is clear that competition within the team has once again increased. No fewer than six players will make their top-division World Championship debuts, while Steven Strong and Dominic Zwerger, neither of whom was involved last year, are also included in the World Championship squad. That leaves 17 players who already know Tampere from 2022.
“No World Championship preparation is comparable to another, because you never know when which players will join the squad and how they will perform. In that respect, it has gone more or less as we had envisaged,” said Roger Bader.
The team completed five training camps and a total of nine warm-up matches from 2 April onwards. Many players showcased themselves during that time and put themselves forward for future duties, but the head coach can only take 25 to the World Championship.
