With a sweep against EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV, Graz booked their place in the semi-finals last week. Since EC KAC were eliminated by Fehervar in the quarter-finals on Wednesday evening, it has been confirmed that Moser Medical Graz99ers are Austrian champions!
As the last Austrian team still in contention for the title in the cross-border win2day ICE Hockey League, they cannot be denied this title. For the past four years, it had belonged to EC Red Bull Salzburg, but the Bulls, like EC KAC, were eliminated in the quarter-finals. Vienna Capitals and Steinbach Black Wings Linz had already bowed out in the pre-play-offs.
Only for the third time ever are the Austrian champions from Styria. In 1975 and 1978, ATSE Graz set Styrian hearts racing. The 99ers have thus ended a 48-year "drought"! But the winners of the win2day ICE Hockey League regular season are far from finished. They are now also targeting the league title. The best-of-seven semi-final series against Fehervar begins with a home game on Sunday.
