Graz Huskies finish EWHL season in 4th place

Hokiklub Budapest were unable to defend the title after five consecutive championships from 2019 to 2023. This means that the Sabres remain the only EWHL team to have won the gold medal 6 times. The clash between HKB and SKP nevertheless showcased women’s ice hockey at a top European level and was exciting from the first minute to the last. Bratislava’s 2:1 win on Friday was equalised by a Madeline Leidt power-play goal in the 7th minute of the second game. After that, it increasingly became a battle between the two goaltenders. HKB had more shots, while SKP also squandered several good chances to decide the game. They finally did so 4 minutes and 39 seconds before the start of the already anticipated overtime.

In the games for the bronze medal, MAC Budapest beat EC Graz Huskies by an aggregate score of 11-7 over two games. The 18 fine and mostly attractive goals demonstrated the attacking strength on both sides, but also their defensive weaknesses. After the 8:3 in the first game at Graz's Merkur-Arena, many had already expected MAC to secure the medal in the second game as well. But a 0:3 scoreline after the first period shocked not only the home team, but also their fans. At that moment, the Huskies were only 2 goals away from an incredible "sporting miracle". However, MAC fought their way back into the game and scored 3 goals in a row. A single power play ultimately decided the game in favour of the league newcomers (3:4), but the result was not enough to turn the series around...
