Fresh legs for the double-header against Germany
In week #4 of preparations for the 2025 World Championship, as announced, the finalists of the win2day ICE Hockey League, EC Red Bull Salzburg and EC-KAC, will join the national team. Brian Lebler of the Steinbach Black Wings Linz is also making a comeback after ending his national team career three years ago. Christoph Brandner and Kirk Furey will now support Head Coach Roger Bader on the coaching bench. The friendlies against Germany will be broadcast live on ORF SPORT +, while the home game in Zell am See on 24 April will also be available via Krone TV. There are nine fresh faces in the 28-man squad to face Germany: David Maier, Thimo Nickl, Paul Stapelfeldt, Clemens Unterweger, Nikolaus Kraus, Brian Lebler, Thomas Raffl, Peter Schneider and Lucas Thaler.
Alongside the players from runners-up EC-KAC, their head coach Kirk Furey will also join the national team's coaching staff with immediate effect. “Kirk and I had already spoken about this a few weeks ago. Having previously served as head coach of the U20 national team, it was a logical step to also speak with him about the senior national team. He has been on board as an assistant coach since this week and will remain part of the coaching staff for the World Championship,” explains Head Coach Roger Bader, who will once again be assisted by Christoph Brandner from this week, as well as Reinhard Divis as Goalkeeper Coach.
Brian Lebler's national team comeback was already revealed last week. With 33 goals, he was the top scorer of the past win2day ICE Hockey League season. “We met in Linz before the play-offs. I told him with a wink that we would see each other with the national team after the play-offs. That got the ball rolling. Brian is fired up,” says Roger Bader, offering an insight into how he persuaded the veteran to come out of retirement.
Apart from Vinzenz Rohrer, who is fighting to defend the title with the ZSC Lions in the Swiss National League, Marco Kasper, whose release from the Detroit Red Wings is still pending, and Atte Tolvanen, who is with his heavily pregnant wife, the national team is now very close to its World Championship squad. These three players are set to join the team in week #5.
