Final home game before the World Cham­pi­onship

It is 23 February 1947. The first Ice Hockey World Championship after the end of the war is being held in Prague. Hosts Czechia celebrate the first of all their World Championship titles. Austria beat Poland 10:2, Belgium 14:5, the USA 6:5, Romania 12:1, and Sweden 2:1 on that aforementioned 23 February. Austria finished 3rd in the final standings. With 14 goals and 5 assists, Oskar Nowak finished 4th in the scoring standings.

The bronze medal was the second after 1931 and, at the same time, the last in the history of Austrian men’s ice hockey.

Prior to that sensational win over Sweden, Austria had recorded two further draws, while suffering 19 defeats. The second-heaviest loss came at the 2001 World Championship on 4 May. Two days after the 0:11 defeat came the 3:0 win over the US selection.

Sweden have already arrived in Vienna and completed their first training session. Their squad consists almost exclusively of players from the domestic Elitserien, supplemented by two players each from the KHL and Switzerland. A number of NHL players are also expected to join the team for the World Championship itself.

In the upcoming three warm-up games against Sweden, Finland and Czechia, the aim is to adjust to the level of the top nations, the high pace, individual skill and the World Championship game rhythm, Roger Bader: “Adapting to that will be our task.”

The game will be broadcast live at 19:00 on ORF Sport+ and LAOLA1. In 22 games to date, Austria have recorded one win and two draws, alongside 19 defeats.

Austria’s Euro Hockey Tour games will also all be broadcast live on ORF Sport+. Next week, the national team will assemble for the final training camp in Schwenningen (GER), where they will play another warm-up game against Germany on 8 May, also live on ORF Sport+.
