Final decisions made: World Championship squad confirmed
Following the final World Championship warm-up against Canada in Vienna on Sunday evening, Head Coach Roger Bader and his coaching staff faced the difficult decision of selecting the squad for the 2024 World Championship. The roster travelling to Prague on Wednesday comprises 25 players. The opening game against Denmark next Saturday will be broadcast live on ORF 1 at 16:20.

“They were difficult decisions. The four players who will not be travelling to the World Championship now would equally have deserved it and are understandably disappointed. Unfortunately, that is part of the game when making such decisions,” explains Head Coach Roger Bader.
Of the squad that assembled in Vienna, Ian Scherzer, Lukas Kainz, Philipp Wimmer and Emilio Romig are no longer in the line-up. The situation regarding Marco Kasper and Thimo Nickl remains open, as both are still in the play-offs in their respective North American leagues. “We will see whether anything develops there,” said Roger Bader.
Thimo Nickl and the Wheeling Nailers trail 0:2 in their ECHL best-of-seven quarter-final series against the Toledo Walleye. The next games will be played on Wednesday and Friday, with Wheeling having home advantage.
On Sunday evening, Marco Kasper and the Grand Rapids Griffins won their AHL play-off Central Division semi-final series against the Rockford IceHogs 3:1 and have now reached the Central Division final (= quarter-final).
Following the 1:5 defeat to world champions Canada, Roger Bader was confident that another important step had been taken towards being ready for the World Championship opener against Denmark next Saturday: “All in all, I am satisfied. It was a great ice hockey celebration, the kind you do not experience every year. The arena was sold out, the atmosphere was fantastic and our team also helped make it such an ice hockey celebration. That makes me positive. On the other hand, I know that we still have a lot of work ahead of us before Saturday. We still need to consider whether we can optimise anything in terms of the lines. To do so, we will analyse yesterday’s game in detail.”
