Austria missed out on the hoped-for semi-final due to the clear defeat. Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Austria were level on points in the table, but Austria had the worst goal difference, meaning they will now play for fifth place.
As against the Czech Republic, Austria wanted to make life as difficult as possible for Switzerland, but could not find a way through the Swiss. Paul Sintschnig was still able to equalise after falling 0:1 behind after just two minutes, but then the goals came thick and fast. By the 13th minute, Switzerland had pulled clear to 5:1, before Ferdinand Humer kept a little tension in the game with the 2:5 goal before the break.
Paul Sintschnig even made it 3:5 shortly after the first change of ends and 4:7 in the 34th minute, but Austria were then overwhelmed. After 8:4 at the end of two periods, Switzerland added another four goals in the final period to seal Austria's fate.
Head Coach Peter Schweda: "Switzerland deserved to win. They played incredibly. Our resistance simply was not strong enough. Straight after yesterday's win, we tried to impress upon the boys that we had to go into the game with the same mindset and attitude, while keeping our game simple. But then we committed one turnover after another. It was a very harsh reality check. We go through thick and thin together. As a staff, we can only prepare the players; the answer has to come from them. I am curious to see how they now pull together, what response they show and how they start tomorrow's game."
