Extended season

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all IIHF World Championships that were still scheduled to be played in the 2019/20 season were cancelled in March. For the Austrian Ice Hockey Federation, this affected the Division I Group A World Championship tournaments for both women and men, as well as the U18 men's World Championship highlight.

However, the first World Championship appearance of the new season will belong to the U20 national team, which, following last year's sensational promotion, will now face the world's best junior nations in Canada. Group B gets under way in Red Deer over the Christmas holidays with games against Russia, Sweden, the USA and the Czech Republic. The entire World Championship adventure will begin as early as mid-December for the U20 national team, as a training camp with warm-up matches is also planned in Canada.

Postponed by two weeks

The U18 girls will then take their turn with their home game in Radenthein in which promotion to Division I Group A is at stake. The World Championships cancelled this year will then be made up in April. As planned, the women's senior national team will get under way in France on 11 April, with two places in the Top Division up for grabs in Angers. The two relegated teams, Sweden and France, are regarded as the main favourites.

The title race for the U18 men will not begin until 18 April, one week later than planned this year. Asiago will remain the venue, as will the objective of promotion to Division I Group A.

The two remaining men's title races will also be moved back by a good two weeks to give the national leagues more time to complete their championships. The World Championship in Slovenia for the Austrian men's senior national team will therefore begin on 9 May, while the Top Division World Championship in Latvia and Belarus will not be held until between 21 May and 6 June.
