EWHL final: Sabres St. Pölten take on Aisulu Almaty in the EWHL final

On Friday and Sunday, the European Women´s Hockey League will determine its 2025 champion. In the final, which consists of a first and second leg, Sabres St. Pölten will face Aisulu Almaty. The third-place play-off will also be held, with the two semi-final losers, HK PSRZ Bratislava and EVB Eagles South Tyrol, facing each other.

Last weekend, Sabres St. Pölten caused an upset in the semi-finals by defeating regular-season champions HK PSRZ Bratislava. Following a 1:2 defeat in the first leg, the Lower Austrians initially prevailed 2:1 in the second leg, meaning the outcome had to be decided in overtime. There, Hannah Tait secured the Sabres’ victory with her goal in the 67th minute. It is the first final appearance since 2021 for the six-time EWHL champions – and their first since relocating to St. Pölten.

In the final, the Sabres will now face Aisulu Almaty, the 2022 runners-up. The Kazakhs prevailed over EVB Eagles South Tyrol in the semi-finals with an aggregate score of 5:4. Aisulu initially came out on top 3:0 in the first leg, but the second leg proved a nervy affair for the Kazakhs. In the South Tyroleans’ 4:2 win, they were just one goal short of forcing overtime.

The first leg of the final will take place in St. Pölten on Friday at 20:15, followed by the second leg in Zeltweg on Sunday at 18:45. During the regular season, Aisulu won both matches against the Sabres (3:2, 6:2).

THIRD-PLACE PLAY-OFF BETWEEN BRATISLAVA AND SOUTH TYROL

Third place will also be decided in the European Women’s Hockey League. The two semi-final losers, HK PSRZ Bratislava and EVB Eagles South Tyrol, will face each other. In the regular season, the home team prevailed in each of their head-to-head meetings. After the Bolzano side won 4:3, regular-season champions Bratislava recorded a 6:3 victory in front of their home crowd. Both third-place play-off matches will take place in Bratislava on Friday and Saturday.
