Euro­pean Girls Trophy Bratislava: Austria’s U16 women win bronze with victory over Germany

"We were fortunate to be able to work with very talented age groups this season. Like the team, the staff also came together over the course of the season. From camp to camp, the team developed into a very special group that stuck together and had incredible momentum. We improved from training session to training session, from game to game and from shift to shift, and rewarded ourselves with the deserved bronze medal in the game against Germany. We believed in the girls and they believed in us – that was the key to success," said Head Coach Tomas Kala proudly.

"Overall, we played four good games in which every player was able to show what she could do and brought a professional attitude onto the ice. Winning a medal at this major tournament is a big achievement for the U16 team," enthused Assistant Coach Erik Vikström after winning the medal. 

At the tournament organised by the Slovak federation in cooperation with the IIHF, Slovakia fielded two teams. The U16 European Girls Trophy was primarily aimed at players born between 2008-2011, with each team permitted to field two players born in 2012. In addition to the Slovak teams, the national teams of Austria, Hungary, Germany, Poland, France and the Czech Republic also took part.

Austria opened the tournament with a 1:0 win over Slovakia Blue. They suffered a 1:4 defeat against Hungary, before beating Slovakia White 2:0. In the decisive clash with Germany, Austria’s women raised their game once again to record a 5:3 victory.
