Euro­pean Cup: Austria’s U16 women lose final match to Hungary 1:8

Austria’s U16 women’s national ice hockey team lost 1:8 to Hungary in their final game of the U16 European Cup in Ferlach. It was their fifth defeat in five games. They only picked up a point against France following a 2:3 overtime loss. Slovakia won the tournament, claiming victory in all five games in regulation time and reaching the maximum tally of 15 points.

The team coached by head coach Tomáš Kala fell behind 0:1 to a Lara Sághy goal after exactly 14 seconds in their fifth game against Hungary at the Ferlach Ice Arena. Helga Tamás made it 2:0 for Hungary with twelve seconds remaining in the period (20.).


Tamás produced a stellar display in the Gunsmiths’ Town, extending her team’s lead to 4:0 in the second period with two further goals, on the power play (27.) and in the 34th minute.


Johanna Sintschnig (42.) scored Austria’s consolation goal to make it 1:4 early in the final period (42.). Helga Tamás crowned her performance with her fourth goal, making it 5:1 on another power play (44.). Réka Hiezl (47.) and Liza Görbe on the power play (48.) made it 7:1 with a double strike within 75 seconds, before Réka Hiezl again had the final say, making it 8:1 (51.).


Slovakia won the tournament, claiming victory in all five games in regulation time and reaching the maximum tally of 15 points. Hungary finished second with nine points, while Germany took third place with seven points, ahead of France – also on seven points. Germany had won the head-to-head encounter 5:1. Poland followed in fifth place with 6 points, with hosts Austria finishing sixth on one point.
