Following the clear 0:9 opening defeat against Slovakia, the team coached by head coach Tomáš Kala faced France in its second game at the Ferlach Ice Arena. France had lost 1:5 to Germany on Tuesday. The French had the upper hand in the first period and capitalised on a power-play opportunity through Rose Chazaud to take a 1:0 lead at 14 minutes.
Austria turned the game around in the second period: first, Hanna Pap equalised at 27 minutes to make it 1:1, before Anna Brandtner put Austria 2:1 ahead with a goal 50 seconds after the halfway mark at 31 minutes. Austria then missed the chance to extend their lead. After successfully killing a penalty, the ÖEHV selection had two consecutive power plays but was unable to score.
There were also several penalties in the final period, and Austria again failed twice to beat Lysa Nogaretto in the Les Bleuettes goal. France made use of another power play just under seven minutes from the end, with Albane Bernel equalising at 2:2. The match, disrupted by numerous penalties, remained highly exciting and eventually went to overtime, where Zoé Crey scored the winning goal to make it 3:2 for the French at 63 minutes. In the second afternoon game, Poland beat Germany 4:3 in a penalty shootout.
