EHC Lustenau have match point in the final next Saturday after home win against Kapfen­berg!

Suddenly, only two remained: EHC Lustenau faced the in the first home game of the Ö Eishockey Liga final at the Rheinhalle Lustenau on Saturday in front of almost 1.900 fans.KSV Kängurus. Following the rousing Austrian national anthem, the two best teams after the regular season began the decisive best-of-three series for the title, immediately getting down to business without much feeling each other out.

The visitors had the first power play early on after a line-change error by Lustenau, but failed to score. The team from Vorarlberg then took control and were on top without creating any real clear-cut chances. The Lions then had their first power-play opportunity too – this time Kapfenberg had too many players on the ice during a change. As the first period progressed, the Styrians improved with every shift and the game developed into a brisk end-to-end affair. Both netminders – Felix Beck for Lustenau and Felix Nußbacher for Kapfenberg – kept clean sheets until the first buzzer.

In the second period, Lustenau goalscorer Chris D’Alvise appeared in the slot following a quick attack, but KSV netminder Nußbacher produced a glove save for the highlights reel from his slap shot. The first final game naturally became more intense and exciting with every minute. Daniel Oberkofler had the Kängurus' best chance midway through the game, but was denied from close range by Lustenau netminder Beck. At the other end, Manuel Metzler forced KSV goalie Nußbacher into a huge glove save with a shot from the slot.

With the game goalless for so long, emotions rose on both sides, while the pressure on the players increased with every minute. Lustenau successfully killed off a penalty and even had two shorthanded chances. With the final attack of the second period, the hosts took the lead with the first goal of the series: Riku Tiainen, falling to the ice, sent the puck over the line from the slot with a final effort to make it 1:0 to Lustenau exactly five seconds before the second buzzer (40.).

The Lions got off to a dream start in the final period: following a fine combination, Martin Grabher Meier pounced from close range to make it 2:0 (42.). Just under four minutes later, Kapfenberg were also on the board in the final series: after a fine attack, Pierre Graf converted a superb cross-ice pass from Christoph Draschkowitz for the 1:2 goal (46.).

The hosts quickly found the right response and restored their two-goal lead: following a quick attack, Riku Tiainen fired from the right face-off circle to make it 3:1 for Lustenau (48.). The Lions added another: Jonas Kutzer scored on the power play with a delicate wrist shot to make it 4:1 (54.). Just 40 seconds later, the game was close again: Christoph Draschkowitz got his stick blade to a pass from his brother Lukas and cut the deficit to 2:4 (55.).

Soon afterwards, the team from the Mürz Valley had a power play, including a spell with a 5:3 advantage. Lustenau fought vehemently to prevent a goal and defended their two-goal lead. In the end, the Styrians pulled goalie Felix Nußbacher, but Lustenau gave up nothing more and took a 1:0 lead in the best-of-three series. The second final game takes place at the Stadthalle Kapfenberg on Saturday, 14 March 2026, starting at 18:30. EHC Lustenau can secure the championship title with an away win, while Kapfenberg can only extend the series with a home victory.

Play-off format

The play-off match-ups, from the quarter-finals through the semi-finals to the final, are each decided in a best-of-three series (H/A/H). The teams that record two wins first advance to the semi-finals. If the score is level after regulation time, a five-minute three-on-three overtime period is played, as in the regular season. Should overtime also fail to produce a decision, a penalty shoot-out follows. In the semi-finals, the highest-ranked quarter-final winner after phase 1 plays the lowest-ranked quarter-final winner after phase 1. The semi-final winners meet in the final.
