Deutsch­land Cup: Show­down against the hosts and finale against Denmark

“A derby is always something special,” adds Head Coach Roger Bader. Within the team, the aim before the start of the Deutschland Cup was to leave the tournament with at least two wins. “We see the Deutschland Cup as a playoff tournament from which we want to emerge positively. We want to show that we belong here,” explains Stefan Gaffal.

The 3:2 overtime win against Slovakia gave the team confidence for the final two games, Marco Kasper says: “This is a great success for us. Getting our first win in the first game is obviously really good for us.”

Germany also opened the tournament with a 3:2 overtime win over Denmark. Daniel Schmölz scored the winner in overtime.

77th edition

Germany and Austria last faced each other only six months ago. In their World Championship preparations, Austria narrowly lost 1:3 in Schwenningen/GER, making their case for their current participation in the Deutschland Cup. The last win over their neighbours came just three years ago. Also during World Championship preparations, Austria celebrated a 3:2 victory in Regensburg/GER.

From the Austrians’ perspective, it is time for another win, Lukas Haudum says: “Playing against Germany is always a great matchup. We will give it everything; there is always extra motivation involved. It is time we beat them.”

Against Denmark 15 hours later

To conclude their first participation in the Deutschland Cup, Austria face Denmark on Sunday morning at 11:00. There are just 15 hours between the game against Germany and puck drop against Denmark. From the perspective of Stefan Gaffal, however, this is not a problem: “We are all used to playing two games in quick succession. We are professionals and will be 100 per cent ready for both games.”

And Marco Kasper adds: “We always take it game by game. Everyone wants to show how good we are as Austria, how good we are as a team.”

Austria have played Denmark 37 times to date, with an extremely positive record of 27 wins, one draw and nine defeats. Austria won each of the last two meetings, leaving the ice with a 3:1 victory at the Meca Hockey Games in Lorenskog/NOR in November 2019, and prevailing 3:2 after overtime at the Ö-Cup in Klagenfurt in February 2020.
