Confirmed – Austria will play in Group A in Prague at the 2024 World Championship!

On Wednesday, the IIHF and the Czech World Championship Organising Committee announced the final group allocations for the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Austria’s men’s national ice hockey team will play in Group A in Prague from 10th to 26th May 2024. New: The ÖEHV side will face Canada, while the USA have been moved to Group B.

Shortly after the end of the World Championship, the IIHF had announced an initial group allocation, which has now been published with an update and a change. Head Coach Roger Bader’s team will play Canada, Finland, Switzerland, hosts Czechia, Denmark, Norway and Great Britain in Group A in Prague in May 2024.

In the first published version, the USA were still among Austria’s group opponents, but the US boys will now move to Group B in Ostrava. The USA, Germany, Sweden, Slovakia, Latvia, France, Kazakhstan and promoted Poland, who return to the top division after 22 years, will therefore play there. Ticket sales for the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will begin in October 2023.

Roger Bader: "Now that we will face both the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the world rankings, this group can certainly be described as a group of death. This set-up is rather unusual, as the two highest-ranked nations in the world rankings are usually seeded separately. With hosts Czechia, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and promoted Great Britain also in the group, it has to be considered very strong. The fact that the venue has remained the same for us makes no difference. Whether it is Prague or Ostrava, we are at the World Championship to perform. Naturally, the proximity is convenient for the fans and we are also hoping for strong support."
