Canada claim World Cham­pi­onship gold

Canada won the IIHF World Championship final in Riga, Latvia, 3:2 against Finland in overtime to be crowned ice hockey world champions for the 27th time. Nick Paul scored the gold-medal-winning goal for the North Americans, who had almost been eliminated in the group stage.

Mikael Ruohomaa gave Finland the lead in the first period (9.), before Maxime Comtois equalised in the middle period (25./PP). Petteri Lindbohm restored the Finns' lead in the final period (46.), while Adam Henrique sent the game into overtime with Canada's second power-play goal (53.).

In overtime, Canada broke away on the counterattack, with Paul scoring from a Connor Brown assist. Brown had a hand in all three goals.

The USA secured the bronze medal with a 6:1 win over Germany in the third-place play-off. Christian Wolanin (6.), Conor Garland (27.), Jack Drury (29.), Jason Robertson (32.), Trevor Moore (43.) and Ryan Donato (50.) scored for the US boys. Dominik Bittner netted Germany's consolation goal (50.).

Even without a medal, the World Championship in Latvia was a complete success for Germany: fourth place was their best result at an A-level World Championship since the home tournament in 2010.
