Breaking the Ice: National team players on the big screen

This week, “Breaking the Ice”, a film by director Clara Stern in which almost everything revolves around ice hockey, is coming to Austrian cinemas. National team players including Anna Meixner and Charlotte Wittich also took to the ice for the filming, while Christian Klepp, Team Manager of the women’s national team, contributed his expertise to the ice scenes, and ÖEHV staff member Peter Schweda was also involved.

The story: Mira lives for ice hockey and leads her team as captain with strong determination. It is a challenge to reconcile this with her role in her parents’ wine-growing business: together with her mother and her enterprising but increasingly senile grandfather, she runs the farm – with all the responsibility that entails.

The new player Theresa completely unsettles her with her carefree nature and openness. And when Mira’s missing brother Paul suddenly reappears and the three of them lose themselves in Vienna at night, Mira discovers the freedom that comes with breaking rules, reinventing herself – and that you can only love when you let go.

With Alina Schaller (Vorstadtweiber) as Mira, Pia Hierzegger (Die wilde Maus) as her mother, Wolfgang Böck (Trautmann) as her grandfather, Judith Altenberger as Theresa and Tobias Resch as Paul, the new cinema film by director Clara Stern boasts a high-calibre cast.

The same is true on the ice, where national team players including Anna Meixner, Charlotte Wittich, Sophia Volgger and Annika Fazokas took part.

A total of 14 ice hockey players from the Sabres, the Salzburg Eagles, the IceCats Linz and Styria took to the ice during filming. They included Anna Meixner, Charlotte Wittich, Karolina Hengelmüller, Laura Lüftenegger, Laura Kraus and uvm.

Clara Stern first contacted the Sabres for the project five years ago, attending numerous games and training sessions. Women’s Team Manager Christian Klepp worked with the production team to develop the hockey scenes.

The two lead actresses, Alina Schaller and Judith Altenberger, trained with the Sabres’ second team during the coronavirus pandemic for the cinema film and also completed additional private sessions.

The coach in the film is also very well known in Austrian women’s ice hockey: American Jacqueline Thode came to Austria as an import player in 2010 and has since made the country her home.

Peter Schweda and Philipp Ullrich can also be seen on the ice in one scene.

The film will be shown in Austrian cinemas from 25 November, and we are giving away via Facebook and Instagram 3x2 tickets, including original jerseys from the filming.
