Austrian ice hockey mourns Werner Alfare
Last Thursday, 4 September 2025, Werner Alfare passed away at Dornbirn Hospital at the age of 75, surrounded by his closest family. Our deepest sympathies are with his family, relatives, friends and companions during this difficult time.

On Sunday, 17 August 2025, Werner Alfare was out cycling when he suddenly collapsed. Despite resuscitation measures being initiated immediately, Werner fell into a coma from which he never awoke before his death.
Werner Alfare had been associated with EHC Lustenau in a wide range of roles since 1976. Alongside his family, he devoted most of his life to the club. His roles ranged from press officer and team manager to sporting director and president, an office he held from 2001 to 2011.
Werner also contributed his experience and knowledge at association level, serving for many years within the VHV as vice-president, secretary and sports coordinator, and playing a key role in the founding of the ALPS Hockey League.
Following his retirement, Werner remained involved in ice hockey, and particularly with EHC Lustenau, as its ‘finance chief’. He supported the board with advice and practical assistance, contributing his extensive experience, expertise and tireless commitment. Werner shaped ice hockey in Vorarlberg and EHC Lustenau over almost five decades like hardly anyone else.
“The news of his sudden passing has deeply shaken our club. In Werner, we have lost not only a valued friend but also a special person whose absence will be difficult to fill. EHC Lustenau will always remember him with affection and gratitude. Our deepest sympathies are with his family. May you find comfort and strength during this difficult time,” said EHC Lustenau President Herbert Oberscheider on behalf of the board and the entire EHC family.

We will miss his commitment and passion. Our condolences go to his family and everyone who was close to him.”
