Austria vs. Germany clash marks a semi-round anniversary
When Austria’s and Germany’s national ice hockey teams line up on their respective blue lines at the Zeller Eisarena on Thursday and the anthems ring out, this fixture will shortly get under way for the 85th time (including games against the GDR). Austria enter the game buoyed by their victory over reigning world champions Czechia and with nine new players. The "return leg" follows in Rosenheim on Saturday. Both games will be broadcast live on ORF SPORT +, while the home game in Zell am See on 24 April will also be available via Krone TV. Tickets are available through the ÖEHV online shop.

Last Saturday, Austria celebrated their first win in the current build-up to the 2025 World Championship with a 4:3 overtime victory over Czechia. Germany began their preparations with 0:7 and 0:1 defeats to Czechia, before claiming their first win with a 3:2 result against Slovakia last week. In the most recent Austria vs. Germany encounter, our neighbours prevailed 6:0 in the Deutschland Cup. However, while it is often done, comparing the game in autumn 2024 with the upcoming one is not permissible. Both Austria’s and Germany’s squads differ in many respects. "They are two completely different teams," also emphasises Head Coach Roger Bader.
The Swiss coach is expecting a strong opponent in any case: "I hope they are as strong as possible, so that we are forced to improve once again." The new players have been quickly integrated into the team and system over the past few days. Now, their first test awaits them.
A year ago, Germany were beaten 2:1 in a penalty shoot-out in Zell am See. But more than the result, what matters to Roger Bader is the development. And the Head Coach is satisfied with what he has seen so far: "The players are showing a good work ethic. The atmosphere is also very good. You can feel that everyone is happy to be here. And the conditions are perfect too. The club and the regional association are making a great effort to ensure that we feel comfortable."
After Thursday’s home game, the national team will move on to Rosenheim (GER) on Friday, where the second friendly will be played on Saturday.
