Austria to play at the World Cham­pi­onship in the Avicii Arena – all fan infor­ma­tion for the big ice hockey festival

Austria have secured their place in the Top Division three times in a row. Following last year's unforgettable performances, including sensational games against Switzerland, Canada, Finland and Norway at Prague's O2-Arena and a World Championship final ranking of tenth, Austria will face Finland, hosts Sweden, Slovakia, Canada, France, Slovenia and Latvia at the 88th Ice Hockey World Championship in Stockholm's Avicii Arena. 

Austrian ice hockey has fond memories of the Stockholm arena, which has a capacity of 13.516 fans at this year's Ice Hockey World Championship: in 1995, the ÖEHV side of the time secured its place in the Stockholm Globe Arena, as the arena opened in 1989 was called at the time, with a 4:4 draw against Switzerland in their second game. Austria had won the first Play Down clash against relegation 4:0 in Gävle, and the Swiss had to take the route to the B Group for the last time, at least for the time being.

After 1989, 1995, 2012 and 2013, the Avicii Arena – formerly the Stockholm Globe Arena and Ericsson Globe, Globen for short in Swedish – will host an Ice Hockey World Championship for the fifth time. The multi-purpose arena is located in the Johanneshov district of Enskede-Årsta-Vantör in southern Stockholm, which is hosting an Ice Hockey World Championship for the tenth time overall. The arena was closed for a year until its reopening in February 2025 and underwent extensive renovation and modernisation.

The Avicii Arena has been brought up to date for the Ice Hockey World Championship, with a new acoustic system creating an even better rink and arena atmosphere for fans. The new lighting system will also create an exceptional live ice hockey experience. The view of the ice has also been taken to a new level through the modernisation of the seating, while a brand-new video cube and a new LED ring will provide entertainment and top information during the games.

Until 2023, the arena, with its diameter of 110 metres and height of 85 metres, was the largest spherical building in the world before being surpassed by The Sphere in Las Vegas. In May 2021, the arena was named after the Swedish DJ, remixer and music producer Avicii, who died in 2018.  

From central Stockholm, ice hockey fans can take Metro lines 17, 18 and 19  (also known as the green lines – recognisable by the T for Tunnelbana) from the city centre – more precisely, "T-Centralen", Stockholm's central underground station – to "Globen" station. The arena is also well connected to central Stockholm by tram and bus. The "Gullmarsplan" bus terminal is around a five-minute walk from the arena.

Fan zone right next to the World Championship arena

For international ice hockey fans, the Swedish organisers have set up a large fan zone close to the World Championship arena on the site of the former Söderstadion. There will be plenty on offer across the 12.000 square metre site, with all World Championship games shown on large video walls. There will also be live music and DJ sets, merchandising stands, and mascot "Beaty" will provide entertainment too. Admission is free for fans with or without a ticket. On World Championship game days, entry to the arena opens one hour before the respective game begins. UFTA invite fans to the Austria House in Stockholm

For Austrian ice hockey fans supporting the ÖEHV team in Stockholm, there will be an "Austria House" in the city centre, as there was most recently in Prague. The „United Fans Team Austria“ – known as UFTA on the international ice hockey scene – invite fans to "The Queen's Head" (address: Drottninggatan 108 - 113 60 Stockholm). 

This pub will be the meeting point for all Austrian fans throughout the World Championship. For the first game on Friday, 09 May 2025, the red-white-red fans will meet at the pub before heading to Stockholm's Johanneshov district, where the blockbuster clash against Finland begins at 16:20 in the Avicii Arena.

The official opening of the Austria House is also planned for 19:30 on Saturday, 10 May 2025, after the game against Sweden. And on Sunday, 18 May 2025, for the game against Slovenia, it is Tracht Day – all Austrian fans are asked to wear traditional dress to the arena for the clash with their neighbours. As always at international games and World Championships, the Austrian fans will create a great atmosphere!
