Austria set for back-to-back success in Klagenfurt
It has now been almost four years since the last Austria Cup was held in Klagenfurt in February 2020. With wins over Norway and Denmark, Austria kept the trophy on home soil. They are looking to repeat that at the upcoming four-nation tournament, which will be played in a semi-final and final format. The ÖEHV side will open their campaign against Hungary on Thursday at 19:00 LIVE on ORF SPORT +, before facing the winner/loser of Italy vs. Poland on Friday at 17:00 LIVE on ORF SPORT +. Should they beat Hungary in the opener and go on to win the title on Friday, it would be back-to-back success in two respects: in their last meeting with Hungary, the team led by Head Coach Roger Bader secured their place in the Top Division with a win in May 2023. They won 4:3 in a penalty shootout at the World Championship in Tampere (FIN).
Hungary will be eager for revenge, as veteran Peter Schneider expects: "They will do everything they can to get revenge, but we will do everything we can to stop them." One thing is certain for the 32-year-old: "It will certainly be a good game."
will call up Head Coach Roger Bader will call up a mix of World Championship-experienced players and players currently making a case for themselves: "For them, it is about putting themselves forward and showing that they belong in a World Championship team."
Poland, this year's promoted team to the Top Division, will be in Klagenfurt, alongside Hungary and Italy, two nations looking to return to the world's top 16 quickly. This makes the Austria Cup a strong field. In front of a home crowd, Roger Bader leaves no doubt about what they want: "Naturally, we want to win our own tournament."
