Austria’s women to face US college side before New Year

“I’m very pleased that it’s getting underway now,” says Alexander Bröms from his native Sweden, where he had spent the past few days in bed with a fever. 25 players have been called up for the first team camp under his leadership. Apart from Laura Leitner, the Sweden-based players are not involved, as they are playing through the league season and Bröms already knows the players well.

The Swede selected the current squad in close consultation with his colleagues Petteri Hirvonen and Mario Bellina. Between Christmas and New Year, the aim is to get to know as many players as possible in order to gain an impression of them. General Manager Martin Kogler: “Not everything will change by 180 degrees with the new coaching staff. We do not want a radical overhaul. We want to take the good things with us and make adjustments in various areas.”

Important for Alexander Bröms: “To achieve something from the very first training session. We want to make sure that we improve with every training session.”

The team camp will conclude with two exhibition games against Gustavus Adolphus College from the USA, which is among the top teams in NCAA Division III.

In February, the women’s national team will hold another team camp featuring two exhibition games against the Netherlands. From 11 to 17 April, the team will compete against Denmark, Norway, Slovakia, the Netherlands and hosts China in Shenzhen/CHN at the Division IA World Championship for promotion to the Top Division.
