Austria’s women miss out on tour­na­ment victory in Bolzano after narrow defeat to Italy

Austria were without captain Anna Meixner against Italy, after she had already set off back to North America on Sunday morning. Without their skipper, Austria took several penalties. Particularly at the start of the second period, they were two players short for 1:45 minutes, but came through unscathed. However, in the 26th minute, Selma Luggin was finally beaten as Italy took a 1:0 lead.

Austria continued to keep the game open and worked relentlessly towards the opposition goal, but were unable to reward themselves. On the contrary, the hosts made it 2:0 in the 55th minute of the final period. For Italy, the tournament already represents a first dress rehearsal for next February’s Olympic Games.

Coach Joey Vollmer: "Our training sessions focused on internalising our playbook with minor adjustments. Without our North American-based players, we had the opportunity to assess new players. The main focus was on defence. In Selma Luggin, we had a world-class goaltender who rose above herself against Italy."
