Austria’s women lose first test against US college side after a penalty shootout
Without their Sweden-based players and several other key players, Austria’s women’s national ice hockey team lost 3:4 to US college side Gustavus Adolphus on Thursday evening after a penalty shootout in the first of two test matches. It was the first game under new coach Alexander Bröms, who deliberately omitted the Sweden-based players from his call-up, as he already knows them very well from his Swedish homeland. The aim of the first training camp under his leadership is to assess as many players as possible.
They had their first opportunity to impress under competitive conditions on Thursday. It was a particularly memorable afternoon for Verena Haselsteiner, whose goal for 1:0 was also her first in the national team jersey. Overall, the Austrians took the lead three times, but conceded the equaliser on each occasion.
The 400 fans in Innsbruck were treated to a fast, entertaining game from the first second to the last. The young red-white-red team showed what they are capable of at times, although technical and tactical errors also crept in repeatedly. In overtime, they also had to kill off a penalty before the shootout required no fewer than 14 shooters on each side to decide the game. The Americans eventually came out on top.
They will face each other again in Innsbruck tomorrow, Friday, LIVE.eishockey.at will show the game live at 15:20.
