Austria's U20 national team wins World Cham­pi­onship warm-up against Germany in over­time

Austria's U20 national team enjoyed a successful first World Championship warm-up game at the Charles V. Keating Centre in Antigonish, the hometown of Head Coach Kirk Furey.

After a scoreless first period, Austria took two penalties in the second period, with Germany using the second power play to take a 1:0 lead. The ÖEHV selection responded well and turned the game around to 2:1 with a double strike from Luca Auer and Luca Erne within 14 seconds (32 minutes).

Austria made the better start to the third period and extended their lead to 3:1 through a power-play goal from Ian Scherzer (42 minutes). Germany pressed for a goal to reduce the deficit late on, and David Reinbacher could have sealed the game with an empty-net goal, but only hit the post. Germany equalised with two goals in the final two minutes.

In overtime, Finn van Ee scored the winning goal for Austria's U20 after exactly one minute and 50 seconds to make it 4:3. The red-white-red team’s next warm-up game is scheduled for Saturday, 24 December 2022 at 00:00 (local time: Friday, 19:00) in Truro against Slovakia, before Austria open their World Championship campaign against Sweden on Monday.

Kirk Furey, Head Coach Austria: "It was a good start for our team. We executed what we set out to do. We want to play fast, we want to play simple, we want to play aggressively. The team gave Germany very little space, then we took two penalties in the second period and the opponent gained momentum from the power plays. The boys responded well and we were 3:1 ahead in the third period. Germany equalised in the final two minutes. But the mentality and attitude were right today, and that is how we scored the winning goal through Finn van Ee in overtime. We deserved to win, but this is only one step in our process. We want to take the next step against Slovakia on Saturday!"
