Austria ready for their 82nd ‘brother duel’
Austria’s men have three warm-up games remaining ahead of the 2024 World Championship. They will face last year’s two finalists, Germany and Canada. This Thursday, they meet their neighbours away in Garmisch for the 82nd time overall, before the home game in Zell am See follows on Saturday and they face world champions Canada in Vienna on 5 May.

David Kickert and Paul Stapelfeldt of champions EC Red Bull Salzburg have joined the squad this week. Overall, Austria will face Germany with an almost identical squad to the one that took on Czechia the previous week. The team showed a huge improvement in performance there and came close to wresting a draw in regulation time from the World Championship hosts in the home game in Linz.
That is what we need to build on, Head Coach Roger Bader: “We want to build on that performance. Although Germany are also still without their players from overseas and the DEL finalists, they have a strong squad thanks to their depth. These two games will once again help us take the next step.”
Germany recorded a 7:3 win over Slovakia the previous week, before being beaten 4:5 after overtime in the second warm-up game. The German squad comprises 26 players in total, with goaltender Mathias Niederberger and forwards Yasin Ehliz and Maximilian Kastner of DEL semi-finalists Red Bull München among the new additions.

From Thursday, further players from this year’s two finalists in the win2day ICE Hockey League will join the red-white-red squad. They will initially remain in Zell am See and could make their first appearance in World Championship preparation on Saturday. The updated squad will be announced no earlier than Friday.
The two games on Thursday and Saturday mark the 82nd and 83rd meetings between Austria and Germany respectively. The record: 18 wins, 4 draws, 59 defeats. They last met during the November break at the Deutschland Cup. Austria lost 3:5 on that occasion.
